Healthy Hot Cocoa

Thinking of hot cocoa brings back such fond memories from childhood. My sister and I had quite a tradition of running inside to make hot chocolate once our fingers nearly turned to icicles and we were finally finished playing outside in the snow. We would recklessly stomp the snow off our boots, drop our wet mittens in the laundry room sink, and rush to the canister of Swiss Miss powder. Extra heaping spoonfuls and plenty of marshmallows were necessary before we sat at the kitchen table, grinning and sipping our hot cocoa.

As everyone knows, hot chocolate is such a warming treat, and it’s perfect for enjoying next to a warm fireplace… one of the best ways to combat frigid winter weather. A few days ago, I came inside from a chilly walk outside, and I just couldn’t seem to warm up. Naturally, I started craving hot cocoa as a remedy for my goosebumps, but I didn’t have any hot cocoa mix. Then, I realized I could totally make some myself, and even put a healthy spin on it. I grabbed some cocoa powder (a total pantry staple for me) and some almond milk, then I stirred up some DELICIOUS hot cocoa in less than five minutes. I was honestly surprised at how sweet and satisfying it turned out with only a few ingredients.

I’m a huge fan of dark chocolate and mint, so I only used 1 tsp of maple syrup and added a dash of peppermint extract – I was warmed up and in total bliss! Feel free to add a bit more sweetener if you prefer more of a milk chocolate taste or dark chocolate. The protein powder and peppermint extract are great, but totally optional, additions, and I suggest adding 1/4 tsp vanilla extract if you omit either one.

Cozy up with this heartwarming hot cocoa next to a crackling bonfire and snuggled in a blanket for best results!
