Apple Pie With Crumble Topping
Apple pie a la mode is such a classic dessert, and it has always been one of my favorites. Although it takes quite a bit more time to make from scratch, it is 100% worth the work! This recipe features a crust that is nothing short of INCREDIBLE, a lightly spiced filling, and an oat based crumble that ties it all together perfectly. Not to mention, it creates a delightful aroma that fills your home!
Ingredients Directions Prepare the crust: Whisk together flour, cornstarch, salt, and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Add butter and use a pastry cutter to work it in until the butter is in pea size clumps. Add oil, vinegar, and apple sauce. Stir then knead to combine. If the dough is too dry, gradually add cold water, a few drops at a time. Knead the dough into a ball, then place it in the refrigerator. Peel and slice 4-5 apples. Prepare the filling: Whisk to combine cornstarch, sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a saucepan. Add water and bring to a boil. Turn heat to low and add apples. Stir and simmer for 3-5 minutes, until mixture thickens and apples are tender. Remove from heat and let cool before using. Filling may also be stored in the refrigerator or frozen for later use. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove dough from the refrigerator - it should sit at room temperature for at least 5 minutes before rolling it out. Prepare the topping: Combine flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and rolled oats in a mixing bowl. Add softened butter and applesauce. Mix until crumbly. Place dough on a lightly floured work surface. Roll out crust to about ¼ inch thick. Press into pie pan and put filling inside. Sprinkle on topping. Bake for 25 minutes with a foil covering. Remove foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes, until filling begins to bubble and the top is golden brown. Let set before cutting.
