Açaí Bowl

I first discovered açaí bowls (English spelling acai pronounced ah-sah-EE) on a trip to California.  One bite in, and I was wondering why I had never experienced this “it tastes like dessert for breakfast but is actually good for you” vibe.  The mouthwatering flavor and refreshing sorbet consistency had me hooked right away! So, naturally, I was disappointed when I found out there were no açaí bowl places near my home.  That’s when I decided to make one myself – It took quite a bit of experimentation and a lot of blending, but I have finally mastered it and this recipe is by far my favorite!

Using frozen fruit in the base then briefly freezing it before digging in (if you can wait that long!) seems to be the trick to getting the perfect açaí bowl texture.  Making the base ahead of time, freezing it overnight, topping it, then letting it thaw for a while also works well, and this method is a excellent way to get in an energizing breakfast on-the-go.                                              

Personally, I prefer to use freeze dried açaí powder as opposed to frozen açaí packets, but one serving of either method works great in the recipe.  I ordered açaí powder off Amazon, and it has lasted for months! Frozen açaí packets can be found at most grocery stores but are messier and seem to be a bit pricier per bowl.

Now let’s talk about the benefits of açaí bowls and why I love them so much.  For one, they taste AMAZING!!  Better yet, they are packed full of antioxidants, fiber, protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and overall goodness.  Here are some of the health benefits you get from simply enjoying a bowl…

Açaí:  The Brazilian super fruit has very high levels of antioxidants, which may improve heart health, promote healthy skin, and lower your risk of diseases.

Fruit:  It’s pretty self explanatory – fruits are great for your body and a vital part of healthy and balanced diet!

Protein Powder:  Supplements your body with extra protein, which is necessary for building and repairing tissue.

Greek Yogurt:  A great source of protein, probiotics (which help regulate your digestive system), vitamin B12, and calcium.

Granola:  Adds whole grains and satisfying crunch!

Chia Seeds:  An excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids as well as iron, fiber, and calcium.  Additionally, chia seeds are known to help raise good cholesterol.

Hemp Hearts:  Packed with essential fatty acids, a high proportion of protein, healthy fats, and various vitamins and minerals, hemp hearts give a light nutty flavor to the bowl.

Not to mention, açaí bowls are fun to top, colorful, and overall aesthetically pleasing. Finally… a food that tastes like a treat, looks like a treat, and is a treat for your body!

Tips:

  1. Pair with multigrain toast topped with peanut butter and cinnamon for an extra wholesome meal – yum!
  2. Be sure to stir in the protein powder and açaí powder before blending.  I have forgotten this a few times and poofed powder all over my blender…oops
  3. For a vegan version, substitute Greek yogurt with your non-dairy milk of choice.

Ingredients

Base
 ½ frozen banana
 5 frozen strawberries
 ¼ cup frozen blueberries
 1 scoop protein powder
 1 ½ tsp freeze dried açaí powder or 1 frozen açaí packet
 ¼ cup Greek yogurt (I use vanilla)
Toppings
 granola
 sliced apples
 fresh berries
 chia seeds
 hemp hearts
 shredded coconut
 feel free to get creative!

Directions

Blend frozen fruit on low until evenly chopped in tiny pieces

Add protein powder, açaí, and Greek yogurt. Stir then blend until smooth.

Top and enjoy immediately or freeze until desired consistency
